Cambridge Innovations was founded in Cambridge, MA in 1991, initially as an engineering consulting firm, working on such high-profile system integrations as the industry’s first dimensional weight scanning system for Federal Express, and on the Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission to validate the corrective optics.
Within a few years we began developing our own product lines as an OEM, initially for the telecommunications sector. By 1997 we had designed and shipped the first deformable mirror (DM) driver subsystem for a 349-actuator Xinetics DM deployed at the Calar Alto observatory in Spain, under contract to the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy.
Since then, custom DM drive electronics has been our primary focus; systems compatible with mirrors made by Xinetics (now Northrop Grumman/ AOX), CILAS, Boston Micromachines and Fraunhofer IOF. In 2006, we began a strategic partnership with Boston Micromachines where we manufacture and support most of the drive electronics for their MEMS devices.
In 2020 we procured 2 lines of printed circuit board assembly equipment from one of our contract manufacturers who was merging, relocating it to a new 4000 s.f. building in Framingham. Many of the PC board assemblies for our products are now built in-house, and we are looking for contract manufacturing opportunities to further utilize this equipment to build third-party boards.
